Breast Augmentation/Enlargement

One of the most common cosmetic procedures performed, breast enlargement can be done in about an hour using general anaesthetic. Although an outpatient surgery, full recovery typically takes about two to three weeks though patients are often able to return to work after just the first week.

Types of Implants

There are two main types of implants used for a breast augmentation procedure: saline or silicone. Each can be filled different amounts to create different levels of softness or hardness, and both have their pros and cons. The type of implant you choose will depend on what you specifically are looking to achieve. Be sure to talk with your surgeon about the differences and which type will best fulfill your needs.

Implant size is measured in cubic centimeters (cc) ranging from a very small 90cc to a very large 700cc. The average patient chooses a size between 300cc and 400cc depending on the amount of enlargement they desire. Your individual body chest size, which is measured during consultation, can affect the sizes you are able to receive.

The Procedure

Implantation can occur from various incision points, including the axilla, areola, or under the breast. Depending on your body type and the size of the implant you've chosen, the implant will be placed either over or under the pectoral muscle.

It is typically recommended that patients who are thinner, have very small breasts, or who have chosen large implants use silicone implants and have them placed under the muscle.

Breast augmentation is often considered to improve the look of sagging breasts (pstosis) which can often be done if it is not too advanced. Advanced pstosis will often require a breast lift in combination with an implant.

Concerns and Potential Risks

Implants have a finite lifetime averaging around 15 years. They can sometimes interfere with mammograms or cause thickening or hardening of the breast around the implant.

The body also reacts to implants (of all kinds, not just breast implants) by encasing them in a fibrous tissue, forming what is known as a "capsule." In about eight percent of cases there is the risk of capsule contracture, meaning the capsule begins to tighten around the implant.
